Düsseldorf University of Applied Sciences starts off on a research expedition in the Antarctic

(sf) The Laboratory for Environmental Measurement Engineering headed by Prof. Dr. Konradin Weber at the Faculty of Heavy Engineering and Process Technology has set off on a research expedition to Deception Island off the Antarctic Peninsula. The expedition aims to investigate the emissions of the Deception volcano. Christian Fischer from Düsseldorf University of Applied Sciences (D UAS) will research the volcano for five weeks in an international team together with Spanish and Japanese scientists. He will be deploying the latest laser measurement systems available to the Laboratory for Environmental Measurement Engineering in order to determine the dusts and noxious gases emitted – such as carbon dioxide (CO2) and hydrogen sulphide (H2S) – in order to gain indications of the volcano's activity and to determine rates of emission.
The volcano's most recent eruption was in 1970. The preceding eruptions in 1967 and 1969 severely damaged the Chilean and British research stations on Deception Island. The present expedition will use the Spanish research ship "Las Palmas" with the Spanish research station "Gabriel de Castilla" serving as the land base for the research work.
The Laboratory for Environmental Measurement Engineering at D UAS has been involved several times in past years in international research campaigns taking measurements of volcanoes, for example on Mt. Etna (Sicily), Fogo (Cape Verde Islands), Volcano (Aeolian Islands) or Mt. Teide (Tenerife). These research measuring campaigns once more underline the international activities of Düsseldorf University of Applied Sciences.
