Won the lottery – measuring equipment worth 10 000 Euro for the Department of Electrical Engineering
(sf) It was the delight of a winner when Prof. Dr. Hans-Georg Lauffs, head of the Laboratory for Electronic Components, Circuit Engineering and Sensor Systems, untied the packages on 20th November 2009 in the presence of representatives of Hameg, a manufacturer of measuring apparatus from Mainhausen. He had good reason to smile because he had just won a measuring station worth 10 000 Euro for the university.
The company launched this "University Initiative 2009" for the first time this year. "Our aim is to promote science, research and teaching at German universities," said sales director Thomas Modenbach during the handover in the laboratory. The company wrote to around 115 deans at all technical teaching and research institutes throughout Germany and invited them to participate in the competition. The draw was won by the students at the Department of Electrical Engineering. Elements such as a power pack, an oscilloscope to visualise measurement signals, a function generator and, as a highlight, a state-of-the-art spectrum analyser have since enhanced the laboratory.
The prize was doubly pleasing for the head professor. "This will enable us to provide even better equipment for our students with regard to their projects and bachelor work" he said, whist childhood memories were also awoken at the same time. At the age of 14, now some 30 years ago, he was give a "Hameg 107" for Christmas, an oscilloscope that still stands in the laboratory today and even now is in regular use. "That was the turning for me and my later career in life", he recalled.
