Design prizes for social campaigns

(sf) The comic-book figures featured in Vanessa Hamann's posters are super heroes because they promote organ donation and save lives. The student of communication design dreamed up the poster campaign "Everyday heroes" - also displayed in Düsseldorf in Graf-Adolf-Platz square - last year for the Federal Association of Organ Transplant Patients. Her project won a prize in the "Ideas that matter" competition. Franz Stein, head of sales promotion at Sappi, presented the certificate to her in the "fifty fifty" Gallery on 8th July 2009. "Ideas that matter" is not a run-of-the-mill competition because its prime concern is social commitment. The participants drew up campaigns solely for charitable organisations", explained Mr Stein. The same applies to the "Karo" campaign created by Felix Demandt and Sön Becker, both of whom were awarded a prize. Their campaign drew attention to prostitution and human trafficking on the German-Czech border and was mainly on show in Eastern Germany.
A total of twelve European entries won prizes in 2008. Two campaigns from Germany won through against their professional rivals. They were designed at the Department of Design by Vanessa Hamann and by Felix Demandt and Sön Becker under the watchful eye of Prof. Wilfried Korfmacher and were implemented by Sappi, a paper manufacturer. Up-and-coming designers from Düsseldorf have been successful seven times now since 2003 with their "ideas that matter".
