Success story of an engineer - second alumni meeting of the Faculty of Electro-technology again a complete hit
(sf) Whether development, project or system engineer. Whether IT consultant, solution manager or senior vice president – all have one thing in common: They graduated with a degree in engineering or as a Bachelor of Science from Düsseldorf University of Applied Sciences. Some 100 former students from home and abroad met up again during the second alumni meeting in the foyer of the extension building on Georg-Glock-Strasse in Düsseldorf-Golzheim on 10th October 2009. The focus of the event was on meeting up again with former students and lecturers, recalling old times together and making new contacts.
The Dean, Prof. Dr. Harald Jacques, reported on the changes in the Faculty of Electro-technology, the new Bachelor and Master courses, current university policies and the new construction of the university.
"Chance must intervene in order to make a career"
In his presentation "An engineer less ordinary – my unusual career as an engineer" former student Jürgen Grewe (Dipl.-Ing.) depicted the international career path an engineer can go down. The successful technician now lives in Switzerland and works for Nokia Siemens Schweiz AG as head of the Network Implementation division. After graduating from Düsseldorf University of Applied Sciences in 1989, he was employed by Siemens in the plant construction division. He was initially stationed in a number of large cities in Germany. Leaving Berlin in 2001, he then travelled the world for the concern until 2007, taking in Indonesia, Portugal, Malaysia and Algeria, for example. Those present found his "decision over breakfast" particularly amusing. He had only just been approached one morning concerning a position to launch a project management system in Iran-Dubai, among other things, when shortly afterwards he was sitting in a plane on his way there. Reflecting on the 20 years of his personal working life, Jürgen believes that "Chance must intervene in order to make a career". This series of presentations was introduced at the first alumni meeting last year and is to be continued in the future so as to pass on valuable experience to other generations.
How a fascination for technology and innovation can keep one fit was demonstrated by a special alumnus: Prof. Dr. Gerhard Elsner. He took up his post as professor for microelectronics and microsystem engineering at the faculty in 1996 and retired in April 2009 aged 65 years. Although that is no reason for the dedicated representative of the faculty and founder of the colloquium to put up his feet: "He played a decisive role in organising the event", emphasised Prof. Jacques.
Summary: The alumni meeting is to become a fixed date in the calendar for knowledge transfer and networking, something which both visitors and organisers agreed on.
In order to further expand the alumni database, the faculty would like all former students who have still not registered to send in their contact data to the following e-Mail address: eval.et@fh-duesseldorf.de
