Concluding ceremony for an innovative optional subject

(D UAS) A concluding ceremony was held on the traditional feast of St. Barbara on 27th November 2009 at the Foundry Institute of Duisburg Essen University for the nine students who worked on the "Simulation process for component optimisation" project. The Society of German Foundry Specialists (VDG) awarded a sponsorship prize, the "Newcast Student Award", to the cooperation project between D UAS, Messrs. MAGMA, the Institute for Foundry Technology and Messrs. Voxeljet. The prize was presented on this evening by the general manager of the VDG, Dr. Gotthard Wolf.
They received dedicated assistance at the individual stations of the interdisciplinary project from the professors and employees responsible for the modules in the fields of design/CAD, FEM analysis, casting simulation, rapid prototyping, casting production, cost accounting and collaborate engineering. Despite considerable prior knowledge, the assignment of converting a welded pedestal bearing into a casting was a real challenge for the students. Yet the fact that the topic was exciting was shown by the on-going enthusiasm with which they tackled the task.
Due to the positive feedback from all those involved, the project is to be repeated in 2010.
